Meet Professor Mokbel

Professor Kefah Mokbel is the chief breast surgeon and director of the Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Program at The London Breast Institute of The Princess Grace Hospital. He is also professor of breast cancer surgery (honorary) at Brunel University. Professor Mokbel is also the founder and president of Breast Cancer Hope, a UK-based charity dedicated to improving the quality and quantity of life of breast cancer patients.

Clinical and Educational Background

Following the completion of his undergraduate medical education at the London Hospital Medical College in 1990, Professor Mokbel pursued surgical training at the Royal Marsden, Charring Cross, Chelsea and Westminster, Saint Mary’s, and St Bartholomew’s hospitals and completed his higher surgical training as an oncoplastic breast surgeon in 2000. Professor Mokbel has won various prestigious prizes, awards, and honors during his education, training and postgraduate career.

He qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1994 and was then granted the Master of Surgery degree in 2000 by The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine for his research in the field of molecular biology of breast cancer.

Clinical and Research Interests

Professor Mokbel’s main clinical interests include oncoplastic breast cancer surgery, breast cancer screening and prevention, family history and cancer genetics, targeted axillary dissection, and wire-free occult breast lesion localization. He lectures nationally and internationally and teaches the techniques of modern breast cancer surgery, including skin and nipple sparing mastectomy and immediate implant-based ADM-assisted pre-pectoral breast reconstruction.

Professor Mokbel’s research interest lies in the field of molecular biology, breast density, and the clinical management of breast cancer and reconstructive breast surgery. In addition, he has authored or coauthored more than 400 scientific papers, editorials, commentaries, and textbook chapters (Google Scholar H-index = 51 and I10-index = 178) and has authored 14 textbooks aimed at medical students and postgraduate doctors. His current academic interest is focused on how to apply the advances from clinical trials to daily surgical practice and de-escalation of breast cancer treatment in addition to wire-free breast localization technologies. He is a member of the editorial board of prestigious medical journals and has peer-reviewed for renowned journals such as The Lancet.

Radiologist

 

Meet Dr. Malhotra

Dr. Malhotra is a consultant radiologist and radiology joint lead for breast imaging at The Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust in London, England. He is an esteemed member of the British Society of Breast Radiology, and he performs breast screening in the NHS Breast Screening Service.

He is an examiner for the Final FRCR 2B radiology examination at the Royal College of Radiologists. He is an associate editor of Clinical Radiology. He has previously been an advisor to the breast cancer charity, Cancerkin, and course director for MRI Workshops, Annual MRI Study Days, Annual CT Study Days, and several examination courses per year.

He instigated the Radiology Breast fellowship at Royal Free Hospital NHS FT in 2011.

Clinical and Educational Background

Dr. Malhotra trained at UCL Medical School with radiology training at Bart’s Health and breast radiology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. His observership in breast and body MRI was at Memorial Sloane Kettering, in New York City, NY, USA.  

Clinical and Research Interests

Dr. Malhotra is a recognized expert in breast imaging, biopsy, and image-guided excision techniques. His research areas include breast MRI, photodynamic therapy (PDT), PET CT in breast imaging, and PET mammography. Dr Malhotra has published and lectured on a wide variety of radiology subjects nationally and internationally.
